The Point System in Yellowdig

Yellowdig is a social learning platform that combines traditional discussion board offerings with game-based learning and social media tools. This resource explains how to set up the points system in Yellowdig. 

Setting Up Your Community Point System

The points system in Yellowdig will determine how students interact in discussion and set expectations for participation. When setting a point system for students, it is advised by Yellowdig to use the recommended settings as it encourages student participation. 

Click Settings then click Point System in the left navigation menu. Go through each section to configure the point system according to your course needs:

1. Point System: select how points are awarded for the board.
   1. Disable Points: no point awards will be given for activities performed.
   2. Weekly points: weekly participation will be required within a set earning period.
   3. Free Form: a collection of activities must be performed to earn the set total points goal.
2. Point Earning Window: Set the dates and times for when the board is to be available for posts and earning participation. Click View Periods to see the weekly set up and what times each session will start and end.
3. Participation Expectation: By default, board activities are set to the “Standard (Recommended)” option.
   1. To view how the activities are scores, click the View Point Summary link.
   2. To select a new scoring option, click Edit then select a scoring option from the dropdown list provided.
4. Custom Settings: See Advanced Point Configuration settings
   1. Periodic Target: Set the total point value that must be earned weekly.
   2. Earning Rules: Establish the amount students earn from activities performed in the board.
   3. Points Review: Go to this section when finished setting up the board and the setting should be saved.
   4. Periodic Buffer (Optional): allow students to earn over the required periodic target, or weekly point requirements. Students will be able to to work ahead on their participation earnings each week or be able to catch up if they miss participation requirements in a specific week. Also consider using Accolades.
5. Select “Save & Exit” when finished.
    

Changing Point Values

Point-based expectations can be changed in Yellowdig before a class to reflect how faculty wish Yellowdig to grade student posts and comments.
